Virtualization & Infrastructure Engineer
The Virtualization & Infrastructure Engineer will join the Infrastructure Operations team and will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, monitoring and support of enterprise virtualization platforms.
The team operates a heterogeneous infrastructure environment covering VMware, Nutanix AHV and containerization platforms.
The current primary focus of this position will be the operation and support of the Nutanix AHV platform, while maintaining a broader understanding of virtualization and infrastructure technologies.
The engineer will work closely with Infrastructure Engineering, OS teams and other technical teams to ensure the availability, stability, performance and continuous improvement of the virtualization infrastructure.
The role is primarily focused on RUN and operational activities, with opportunities to participate in platform evolution, automation and new technology initiatives.
Virtual machine provisioning and operating system administration are performed by the dedicated OS teams. The Virtualization & Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the underlying virtualization platform and provides the required infrastructure support to the OS teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Virtualization Platform Operations
Operate and maintain enterprise virtualization platforms in production.
Primarily operate and support Nutanix AHV environments.
Administer Nutanix AOS, AHV, Prism Element and Prism Central.
Contribute to the operation of VMware environments when required.
Monitor cluster health, capacity, performance and availability.
Ensure the underlying virtualization infrastructure provides the required resources and availability for hosted workloads.
Troubleshoot virtualization platform issues affecting hosted workloads.
Support OS and application teams when issues are related to the virtualization layer.
Escalate complex issues to Infrastructure Engineering or vendors when required.
2. Nutanix AHV Operations
Operate and maintain Nutanix AHV clusters.
Monitor cluster health, capacity and performance using Prism.
Manage and troubleshoot the virtualization layer supporting hosted workloads.
Monitor and maintain Nutanix storage and networking components related to the virtualization platform.
Manage platform-level replication and resilience mechanisms.
Analyse Nutanix alerts, events and logs.
Investigate performance and availability issues affecting AHV clusters.
Provide technical support to OS teams for issues related to the virtualization infrastructure.
3. Capacity and Resource Management
Monitor cluster capacity and resource utilisation.
Analyse CPU, memory and storage consumption at infrastructure level.
Identify capacity constraints and potential infrastructure bottlenecks.
Contribute to capacity planning and infrastructure forecasting.
Provide recommendations regarding infrastructure expansion or optimisation.
Work with Engineering teams on infrastructure sizing and capacity requirements.
4. Lifecycle Management
Perform lifecycle management activities on virtualization platforms.
For Nutanix, perform activities including:
AOS upgrades
AHV/hypervisor upgrades
Firmware updates
Compatibility checks
Cluster health validation
Apply security patches and recommended updates.
Plan and execute maintenance activities while minimising service disruption.
Validate cluster health following upgrades and maintenance activities.
Maintain platform configurations according to operational and security standards.
5. Monitoring and Incident Management
Monitor virtualization infrastructure and respond to alerts.
Analyse events, logs and performance indicators.
Investigate incidents related to the virtualization layer.
Perform initial root cause analysis.
Participate in incident, problem and change management processes.
Provide technical support during major incidents involving virtualization infrastructure.
Coordinate with OS, Network, Storage, Backup and Engineering teams when incidents span multiple infrastructure layers.
Work with vendors, including Nutanix and VMware, when required.
6. Fault Tolerance and Resilience
Maintain the availability and resilience of virtualization clusters.
Perform operational activities related to high availability.
Replace failed infrastructure components and restore cluster capacity.
Participate in recovery activities following hardware or platform failures.
Support disaster recovery and business continuity activities.
Participate in backup and recovery tests.
Validate the health and resilience of the virtualization platform following recovery operations.
7. Storage and Backup Integration
Operate and troubleshoot storage services supporting virtualization platforms.
Work with Storage teams on capacity, performance and connectivity issues.
Support the integration of virtualization platforms with enterprise backup solutions.
Investigate backup and replication issues affecting the virtualization layer.
Participate in recovery and disaster recovery exercises.
Ensure the virtualization platform is correctly integrated with the required data protection mechanisms.
8. Support to OS and Application Teams
Provide infrastructure-level support to the OS teams responsible for VM provisioning and operating system administration.
Investigate issues where the virtualization layer may impact operating system or application performance.
Support troubleshooting involving CPU, memory, storage, network and hypervisor-related issues.
Provide technical information and infrastructure metrics to OS teams during incident investigation.
Collaborate with OS teams during workload migrations or infrastructure changes.
Ensure clear ownership and escalation between the virtualization and OS layers.
9. Collaboration with Infrastructure Engineering
Work closely with Infrastructure Engineering on platform changes, technical issues and improvements.
Provide operational feedback to Engineering regarding platform configuration, reliability and performance.
Participate in technical reviews and implementation activities.
Support the implementation of new virtualization capabilities.
Contribute operational requirements to infrastructure design activities.
Develop technical knowledge through close interaction with Engineering specialists.
Contribute ideas and technical proposals to improve platform reliability and operational efficiency.
10. Automation and Continuous Improvement
Identify repetitive or manual operational activities that can be automated.
Develop scripts and automation using technologies such as PowerShell, Ansible, Bash or REST APIs.
Automate monitoring, reporting and operational tasks where appropriate.
Contribute to standardisation and automation initiatives.
Improve operational procedures and technical documentation.
Identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency and service quality.
11. Security and Compliance
Apply security and hardening standards to virtualization platforms.
Manage access according to established security policies.
Ensure platform changes follow the required change management processes.
Maintain accurate technical and operational documentation.
Support audit and compliance activities when required.
Qualifications
2+ years of experience in infrastructure, virtualization or systems administration, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Mandatory: Hands-on experience with Nutanix AHV in a production, project or operational environment.
Good knowledge of Nutanix AOS, AHV and Prism.
Experience operating and troubleshooting virtualization infrastructure.
Good understanding of virtualization concepts covering compute, storage and networking.
Experience with infrastructure monitoring, incident management and troubleshooting.
Understanding of patching, upgrades and lifecycle management processes.
Knowledge of high availability, backup, replication and disaster recovery concepts.
Ability to work effectively with Infrastructure Engineering, OS and other technical teams.
Good troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Ability to document technical activities and follow operational procedures.
VMware vSphere experience is an asset, particularly ESXi and vCenter.

The successful candidate should be a hands-on and motivated infrastructure engineer who enjoys working with technology and solving technical problems.
We are not necessarily looking for someone who already knows every aspect of Nutanix or virtualization. Technical curiosity, motivation and the ability to learn are important parts of the profile.
The candidate should be comfortable working in a production environment, taking ownership of operational activities and progressively increasing their level of responsibility.
The role offers the opportunity to develop strong expertise in virtualization and Nutanix AHV while working alongside experienced Infrastructure Engineering and OS teams and gaining exposure to a broad range of enterprise infrastructure technologies, including VMware and containerization platforms.
A proactive attitude, willingness to learn and genuine interest in technology are considered as important as the candidate’s current technical skillset.
